I'm quite experienced with lifting, running and sports in general, but have taken up kettle bells during COVID-19 lockdown and damn, do they hit you. This post is especially for all those confused beginners out there who want to build muscle with kettle bells but don't know how to do so.

I transitioned from the gym to kettle bells and home workouts just a few months ago and I've never felt better. The reason I've managed the transition is due to maintaining the main movements i.e. horizontal pull(Kettle bell bent over rows), vertical pull(Chin ups), horizontal push(inclined Push ups), vertical push(Kettle bell push press), squat(Kettle bell goblet squat) and kettle bell swings(hip hinge).

You can progressively overload them by either increasing reps, sets or weight. I usually do this 3 times a week with rest days In between and it takes approx 1 hour per workout.

Eat like an adult(either at maintenance, deficit or surplus depending on your goal), sleep well, drink water and you can very easily replicate “gym” muscle at home Edit: I love SAS and Pavel. My primary strength program is barbell lifting but I use kettle bells for accessories sometimes including goblet squats, rows, shoulder press and daily swings just for general conditioning.

Thought I'd share my experience with the 10,000 KBS challenge. My glutes and forearms felt way stronger by the end and my times were way better (see chart).

I was pretty worried about getting blisters since I couldn't take a day off, so I used gymnastics grips from the beginning. Have been doing kettle bell and ring workouts for 9 months or so 5 × a week (pandemic left me with only a 28 kg KB and a set of rings).

I decided to do the challenge 19 days before leaving for vacation. Started with the usual 10-15-25-50 x5 scheme with 1-2-3 reps of the supplemental movement.

I preferred that rep scheme, so I mostly stuck with that the rest of the challenge. Those last 5 days were awesome because I was beating some of my earlier times while doing an extra 100 swings.

The Longest time: 29:56 — 25-25-50 x5 swings, 3×3 pull ups in between the sets What else do you call an exercise that can increase both a professional powerlifter’s strength and an elite marathoner’s endurance?

Since I introduced the kettle bell to the West a decade and a half ago, the swing has become a staple in the training of elite fighters and athletes, and has spurred a number of scientific studies that have documented its benefits.

When you start working out with kettle bells, begin by learning the “Hard Style” swing. A ballistic builder of both strength and conditioning, the swing is the center of the KB universe and being able to do one safely and effectively is a prerequisite for other kettle bell skills.

Even at this weight, the force or load of the bell is upwards of 500lbs for a brief moment at the bottom of the swing ! It’s basically an aggressive dead lift that projects the power forward rather than up.

Once you have the dead lift down pat — heels planted, shins vertical, spine neutral, abs braced, etc. Like a punch, the swing takes hours to learn and a lifetime to master.

The basics of the movement are simple: Place a kettle bell on the floor in front of you. From a sumo dead lift stance, “hike pass” the bell back between your legs until your forearms make contact with your inner thighs.

Explosively thrust your hips forward, launching the bell to your chest level. The kettle bell is slightly forward of an imaginary line between both feet.

The body forms a straight line at the top of the swing : the hips and knees extend fully, the spine is neutral. The abs and glutes visibly contract at the top of the swing.

Throw a pair of dice two times and add up the numbers. Your task is to perform as many perfect, crisp swings as possible using a particular set and rep scheme in that timeframe without coughing up a lung.

When you have reached the top “rung,” you start over at the bottom rather than pyramid down: 5, 10, 15, 20… 5, 10, 15, 20…5, 10, 15, 20. A ladder allows one to handle a high training volume without burning out and enables a focus on technique.

Do not stand or sit while resting; walk around and shake off your muscles. If you begin the next set and you notice that the form/quality or speed of the movement deteriorates, then you know you didn’t wait long enough.

Adding some sort of squat is a good idea but it is also okay to do no other lower body exercises for a little while. Stick to this plan for a couple of months and you will find out just how powerful this exercise is.
